HARRISBURG, Pa. – Today the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association Foundation released an impact report summarizing the details of the Pennsylvania Newsroom Internship Program. The initiative is a collaboration with the National Association of Black Journalists-Philadelphia, Pittsburgh Black Media Federation and Temple University. The program offers journalism students paid summer internships at newsrooms across the commonwealth. The initiative was created in 2024 as one of three pillars to support the future of local journalism, enacted by the PNAF in conjunction with the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association’s 100th anniversary. The program addresses the need to create a diverse partner network, connect students to professional journalists, and to develop emerging talent. In addition to financial commitments from participating newsrooms, funding for the program was provided by donations from The Lenfest Institute for Journalism, the Calkins Foundation and PNAF. The nine participating newsrooms were: Bucks County Courier Times, Langhorne Chestnut Hill Local, Philadelphia Erie Times-News FunTimes Magazine The Morning Call, Allentown The Philadelphia Inquirer The Philadelphia Tribune Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Trib Total Media, Tarentum PNA Foundation Executive Director Tanya Henderson touted the inaugural program as a great example of how donations can benefit the future of journalism. “Working with our partners over the last year, we successfully funded and placed 11 students in nine newsrooms across the state at a competitive wage of $20 per hour,” she said. “These students have spent the summer working actively in newsrooms and honing their craft. We are pleased to showcase their enthusiasm, commitment and work in our 2025 Impact Report.” The impact report can be found at the PNAF’s new funder website, pnafoundation.org, designed to showcase the foundation’s mission, pillars and programming in support of more than 200 PNA journalism organizations across Pennsylvania. PNAF’s mission is to support the sustainability of local news through philanthropy and fundraising, training and recognition of professional and student journalists. |
